In business for yourself, but with a network of support
One of our more experienced franchise owners, didn’t hesitate to leverage being part of the wider network, recently, when one of his deals started to come unstuck. Ken Gorman, owner of Transworld Business Advisors of London South West with his wife Nada Saleh, has sold dozens of businesses since joining Transworld in 2018; including many multi-million-pound deals. However, when a private equity firm funding the buyer of a family-owned IT company pulled their investment just weeks before a deal was due to be closed, Ken knew he needed help to find a new buyer.
Working together to finalise the deal
Ken immediately contacted his franchisor, Henry Ziff, and explained the urgency of the situation to him. “I was literally in a panic,” Ken says. “The deal was about a week from being signed-off, when the buyer contacted me to say they needed to pull out for reasons which had nothing to do with the deal. The due diligence process had all been done, and the deal was about 95% complete. So, when I spoke with Henry about it, he immediately put me at ease, suggesting he might have an alternative buyer, but would need to make some calls.”
A franchise owner himself, Henry – who is also the Managing Director of Transworld UK – already had the right connections. He was able to pull out all the stops to support his franchise partner, and spoke with a buyer wanting to expand his IT services business through acquisition. Henry arranged an emergency meeting the following day, and presented the deal to the buyer and advisory team. “Working with Ken, our London South West partner, we were able to get a new offer on the table, agree a price, and close the deal within two weeks. I think this might be a record for us both.”
True support from the top down
Ken is grateful for the way in which Henry supported him with such a tight deadline. “I would have struggled to close this deal, if it hadn’t been for the support of our UK Head Office. We had an urgent deadline, for our seller, which we could not go beyond. It’s a real encouragement to be part of a franchise system, knowing we have a franchisor and Head Office who genuinely care about our performance, and who are prepared to step in and help us whenever we need it.”
