At the start of 2021, Harry Cope opened his new Transworld Business Advisors office in Manchester. Within 18 months he’d closed his first six-figure deal, and has now just closed his second!

When thinking about whether a franchise really can do what they promise, you may be forgiven for thinking there’s some degree of marketing waffle involved. However, for Harry Cope, the youngest in the Transworld Business Advisors’ network, he’s enjoying the best career decision he’s made.

In February 2021, we welcomed Harry, who’d recently opened Transworld Manchester. “I’d initially gone into business with my family, after completing my Economics Degree, and was ready for a new challenge,” Harry explained at the time. “I really liked the concept Transworld presented.”

And now, within just 18 months, Harry has done two major deals – we’re talking seven figure deals and six figure commissions.

His latest deal, completed in September, supported a wine merchant to retire from their business, after a couple of negotiations had fallen through. “I’d initially started speaking to the client when I first opened Transworld Manchester. At the time, they said they had some interested buyers, and were arranging the deal themselves. However, this often doesn’t work out well! I regularly checked-in with how they were doing, building a relationship and establishing trust between us. Then about six months ago, they told me the deal hadn’t materialised, and asked if I’d help them.”

Harry set in motion the Transworld sales process: evaluating the business, identifying and presenting it to prospective buyers. “I could tell this would be a really attractive prospect for the right buyer,” Harry explains. “The business mostly sold wine to the trade, such as restaurants and corporate clients. But, they’d generated a second profitable revenue stream, by creating an online store which had grown substantially during the pandemic.”

Just a month later, Harry found a buyer; a wine business in London. “My client’s business was a good fit for them, and they seemed to establish a rapport with each other, which is an important aspect of our success. A seller usually wants to know their business is going to the right person. They’ve invested their time, energy and life into it, and want to feel confident the new owners are just as passionate about it as they are. As a result, within two months, we’d sold the Wine Merchant!”

As a Transworld advisor, what can you expect to be doing?

From the outset, you’ll project manage the sale of your client’s business, from how it’s presented, to the negotiations. A massive aspect of this is managing all the parties involved! “We’re literally in the middle of everything,” Harry explains, “controlling the flow of information, and taking the brunt of frustration when things are a bit slow, or someone isn’t happy. However, this helps to make sure no party upsets another, so the deal doesn’t fall through. It’s all part of the negotiation process.”

When a seller chooses to manage the sale of their business themselves, they often find they’re in a weaker negotiating position. The backing of a Transworld Business Advisor strengthens them, reducing any fall-out which can come from a self-led sale. “We project manage the whole deal,” Harry explains, “often taking the pressure off the shoulders of our clients so they can focus on running their business as normal which is critical, we’re the ones chasing solicitors, and keeping communication flowing, so all parties remain friendly. The hardest bit is dealing with people! So, we make sure everyone stays on track, and resolve any issues which crop up amicably, so the deal keeps moving forward.”

So, there’s no reason why you can’t follow in his footsteps. “I love what I’m doing, and am still learning with each new deal I take on,” Harry says. “My partner and I have just had our second baby, so it’s been good to balance spending time with her, with working for clients. Tiring; but rewarding! I’m looking forward to continuing to build trust with my clients, and securing more deals as we grow; allowing me provide a better future to my young family.”
