With over 300,000 over 50s currently not in work, and plans to raise the age of retirement, the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, is encouraging people “off the golf course” and back to work – rather disparagingly for those who don’t play golf.

However, a look at the stats around this, or your own personal experiences, indicates it may not be so simple. Research carried out at the end of October, by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) suggested ‘firms are less open to hiring older workers than younger people”.

• 25% of adults said they left work for retirement
• Whilst 19% were made redundant
